Happy Birthday, Gemini!

May 20 – June 21

Gemini, the sign of the twins, is an air sign and under the rulerships of Mercury.
The element of air gives us a clue: Without air, no sound could travel. There would be no spoken word, nor music. Thus, air connects us,  conveys our messages, and carries our prayers to the heavens. It may be invisible, but it is never still.

The sign of the twins is a ‘dual sign’, which implies that there are two sides to its character – but only one shows at any one time.

The story of the twins is told by the Greek myth of Castor and Pollux, the sons of the Spartan Princess Leda, and Zeus, the King of the Gods.
Zeus, well-known as a rampant womaniser, was regularly in hot pursuit of beautiful goddesses, nymphs and even mortals. But, his jealous wife, Hera, was always hard on his heels. Thus, when he laid his eyes on Leda he approached her in the guise of a swan.

Soon, Castor and Pollux hatched from a single egg. Alas, only Pollux had inherited his father’s immortality while Castor was a ‘mere’ mortal. Yet, the two loved each other and were inseparable. They could not bear the thought of ever being separated. Pleading with their father, they asked him to grant their dearest wish –  to share the same fate. If only they could both be immortal!

But Zeus couldn’t grant them this wish. Instead, he offered a different solution: They could share both, their mortality and immortality by taking turns: when Pollux spent his day among the immortals on Mount Olymp, Castor dwelled in Hades among the mortal souls. But, when night fell, they switched roles.

Although now neither of them was permanently mortal, they could never spend time together, except for the brief moments when they passed each other on their daily journeys between Heaven and Hades.
Thus, this solution did not satisfy their longing. Again, they begged their father to relieve their suffering and let them die together.
So touched was Zeus by their love that he released them from their suffering and immortalized them by giving them a place among the stars.

This story reveals a lot about Gemini and by extension, about the human condition. For we all are immortal souls inhabiting mortal bodies. Gemini is most acutely aware of this dual aspect of our existence – our divine potential as well as the physical limitations of our mortal existence.
Gemini often vacillates between divine ecstasy and human lows. But, their emotions are as mercurial as his mind. Wondering what’s next propels them forward. Surely, something new and interesting is just around the corner.
